This scripture is so true. There are times when I want to know something so bad that I think that I would do anything to receive an answer for it. But what use is knowledge that comes free of charge. God expects us to seek after knowledge, "yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom; seek learning, even by study and also by faith." (Doctrine and Covenants 88: 118) These things come from as it says above "persistence and dedication," aka diligence. That is one thing that God always ask from all of us, to be diligent in keeping his word. When we receive something for free, we don't respect it, and when we don't respect it then we misuse it. For example a teen that just got his license also is given a car as a gift from his parents. He will treat that car with far less respect then if he had gotten a job, worked hard, and eventually saved up enough money to get the vehicle for himself. God works through us working, only when we work our hardest and "save up the knowledge" are we then given the wisdom, which is the application of the knowledge in our lives.
One thought that I had while reading this is agency. Maybe it was on my mind because of the devotional for the day but hopefully someone can have some more insight. Agency is something that is given to us, free of charge to us. Is that why it is so often misused and abused, because we don't respect it?
